are a welcome excuse to delve into one of my favorite topics: candles.
Born of wax and wick, these functional objects are a paradigm of good
design. There are countless varieties, not to mention candle paraphernalia,
such as snuffers and bobeches, which sound archaic but are quite useful.

favorites are an American Classic, Crafted Candles from Kansas City,
MO (800-635-0274, ccandlestore.com). The company's hand-dipped tapers
are made of a blend of seven waxes, including paraffin, to minimize
smoking, and carnauba, for its high melting point. The cotton wick
is braided and treated to produce a nearly dripless flame. Of the
47 colors, my favorites are white, ivory, and black. Imagine a darkened
room with a flickering flame and no visible candle; this is the
magic of a black taper.
